Finally, no RPG sessions for us

Posted Sun 02 Jan, 2022.

First I had the idea on my last week off before Christmas, at the end of November. I was going to check Roll 20 and find a table my wife and I could join and finally get back to play some RPG.

Unfortunately, that week off didn't go as planned: I got an annoying cold (not COVID!), and we had one of the boys home half week (same cold, and it could even be that he was the source), and the other one the other half. Oh, well. The good thing is that we started playing Final Fantasy IX on the PlayStation to kill some time, and we are still at it after 29+ hours.

So that didn't work, but why not on the Christmas break? I checked Roll 20 and I learnt a few things, but we didn't get too far anyway. A lot of open tables looking for players for D&D 5E; something we haven't played, we don't have the rulebooks or any idea of how to play it. I'm familiar with some D&D, mostly because some retro-clones (the OSR), and at some time I played some D&D back in the 90s (can't remember which edition). But that's about it.

It is true that our free time is limited, and we are tired when it happens (and the boys have to be sleeping, unless they are as school and I'm off). We tried to play a "one page dungeon" using Dungeon World rules (3 years ago? time flies!), but that didn't click for me: I was too tired to support all that "emerging gameplay".

Yet, we enjoy watching some series; I do gamedev, my wife has been playing through Baldur's Gate a few times; so I have hopes that our brains still function!

I think we would still like to try "one shot", but I don't know where to start! Let's see if I can find a "FAQ" or "How to" for people in our situation.
