This is an unfinished transition of the "Tencent History," written by Wu Xiaobo and published in 2017 by Zhejiang University Press, that I was hired to work on the year of its release.
A former colleage who I had done some work for in the field of paleography connected me with an IT company who, via a university connection, had secured the rights to translate this recently published authorized Tencent company history.
Initially, they hoped I could edit the translation produced by their new machine translator to feed it back into the system and improve its generative ability.
Unfortunately, the quality of the translation was so poor as to be hopeless. They decided I should create a new translation that kept the sentence and paragraph structure as close as possible so it could be used for training AI.
When I was slightly more than halfway done with the book, they pulled the plug on the project and it was never published or distributed.
It's been six years, so I'm dumping the work here for anyone interested in the history of one of China's IT giants.
Personally, I enjoyed the first couple chapters. It was a very interesting window into the late-1990s Internet in China, and includes some rare information about FidoNet and the late-era BBS scene.
