ssh over Tor is sometimes fine but often frustratingly laggy, in my experience. I think you can run your onion service in single hop mode to improve speed if you don't care much about its anonymity.

if you just need a way of figuring out your IP whenever it changes, you could use a script that messages or emails you when the IP changes instead.

I always put my ssh on a random port to avoid automated port scanners. Also check out using fail2ban to monitor / block multiple login attempts.

I guess setting up a tor hidden service to ssh into my home server is the best thing i could do instead of running dyndns and telling everyone my ip. Need to try that, I hope speed and stability is good enough.
