A Terrible Restless Night...

I am way out of it today, after yet another disrupted sleep.

I've been having trouble sleeping lately -- a new thing for me. My entire life I was a sound sleeper, and could usually wake up when needed before the alarm. Now I seem to wake up at 3AM almost every night, lie awake, listen to audiobooks to distract myself, fall asleep and feel like crap in the morning.

Last night was ridiculous. I woke up at just around 3AM with a strong sense of something gone terribly wrong. I was convinced that someone was in the house, for some reason.

Not quite awake, I jumped up, grabbed my killing stick, tossed on some pants, and stepped outside the bedroom.

I am currently all by myself in a giant spooky house. So it was really scary to see the nearest bathroom door closed -- I usually keep it open for air circulation. Worse yet, it was locked. Now I was shitting my pants with irrational fear. I banged on the door with the killing stick, and in my gruffest voice told the intruder to get out.

I know I did not lock the door - I don't even close it when I use the bathroom as I am all alone here. No reply, so I went downstairs and checked all doors - locked, no sign of any disruption. I got a tiny screwdriver to pop the bathroom lock and headed back upstairs, holding my phone in front of me as a torch.

Out of nowhere, with a loud click, a wind-up lullaby toy went off somewhere really close-by, freaking me out completely. I could not localize where from, but definitely in the house, in one of the bedrooms.

I started jiggling the lock through the doorknob hole with my screwdriver, lullaby pinging, my heart ponding, doubting the reality of the situation. The lock sprung, no one inside, of course.

Looking at the phone, I saw that the screen was lit, google assistant up, with "play me a lullaby" on the screen. No reason for that, but a proper soundtrack for this disaster. As for the door, the lock was probably engaged by my mom who had stayed oved for New Year's -- and I haven't closed the door since.

And then it was all quiet again. But now I was totally awake with no hope of sleeping. I climbed into bed, my trusted killing stick within reach, and did some reading, audiobook listening, tossing and turning, and eventually fell asleep when the sky started getting lighter.

I hope I will sleep better tonight.

Yikes, what a nasty night that was!

I, too, suffer from insomnia. About the only thing that works even half the time is having a relaxing pre-bedtime routine. Sleep meds, for whatever reason, don't work unless they're the really potent stuff that creates other problems.

I am very sorry to hear that friend!

If you wake up during the night, light a candle and watch it burn for a while.

Thank you for all the good ideas. I should get some CBD/THC drops - that really worked the last time I had sleep issues. I am not a big fan of THC - it makes me stupid and paranoid, but a small amount (~3mg?) with about 10mg of CBD in oil form is really good for sleep... Totally forgot about that.

keep putting 2-3 drops of lavender oil on the pillow for 2-3 nights in a row to reset your "circadian rhythm"
