Iโ€™ve repurposed shellac 78 rpm for carrying diamond abrasive when faceting stones. No need for scoring, they come pre-grooved!

Have also laminated foil TCGs between quartz and obsidian and cut them like gemstones. Seen the similar done with old PCBsใ€‚

I do most of my computing work on old P3 and G4 computers, also a AMD laptop running Haiku.

Have some vintage rock cutting gear Iโ€™ve restored including 1920s peerless lathe, 1950s Sapphire faceting machines, and 1930s spindle cutter. Also an early 70s singer sewing machine.

Old stuff is always better.

Upcycling is a neat concept. Since getting my amateur radio license my latest obsession has been with setting up mesh networks on the 2m band with DIY parts.

That sounds awesome @istvan. can you show me how that 78 shellac repurposing works? I have a stack of 78'sthat are never going to find a music lover as they are scratched lto a level of unbelievable. So it would be cool to give them a good purpose.

@Addison thats also interesting, what kind of gear do you use?

@maxheadroom You just drill out the center of the album to fit the bolt on your lap. Lay it on top an aluminum backer and screw them together. You just run a bit of diamond abrasive into it and go. Probably works with cerium or aluminum oxide too.

Saying that I should try it when cutting tourmalines. In Sri Lanka they do it with lexan laps. Shellac 78s and vinyl would probably be awesome for a finish.

@maxheadroom at the moment only a couple of handheld radios, the Quansheng UV-K5 and a Yaesu FT-60. The UV-K5 is cheap enough to take apart and repurpose, and has open-source firmware available on GitHub.

โ€” I just built this packet radio controller, and I'm in the process of figuring out what I can do with it. I'd like to eventually design a PCB for it that can be attached directly to a handheld radio.

it may sound weird but i love reviving frgitten and unmaintained software.

๐Ÿ™ norayr ยท Feb 02 at 01:21:

i revived windowmaker dockapp 'shermans aquarium', it wasn't possible to build it since early 2000s. it also required me to revive gai - geteral applet library.

๐Ÿ™ norayr ยท Feb 02 at 01:28:

i also revived many old forgotten apps for maemo which were available for maemo fremantle on nokia n900, and now those apps are back to life and available for maewo leste in their application store.

it is hard. sometimes i see a function and i have no idea what it does and from which library it is called. and it is not documented and does not exist in modern liiraries. so i am trying to figure out what to it does and what to use instead of it today.

it is a great satisfacion for e to see that effort someone put is not wasted, but it is useful today.

i think we already live in the age of cyberpunk. it makes sense to use old devices when those are supported by mainline kernel.

it makes sense sometimes because the device was good: my ibook g4 which i use with gentoo for powerpc doesn have meltdown or spectre or any cpu vulnerability yet o be discoered.

on the other hand some deices it is make sense to use because those hve good support in mainline kerner. for example texas instruments mobile chipsets have vey good support in kernel.

so i found sch device ad i run maemo leste which works on devuan, with contemporary software.
