@Ruby_Witch well yeah, and open and standard connector would have been better. But a standard USB connector on the bottom of PDAs at the time probably would have sucked. It wouldn't have held up well clipping into and out of cradles and keyboards over and over.

There's working project to use an Arduino to convert a Palm Foldable Keyboard into USB so you can use it with any USB compatible host. It is a bit bulky, but it works.
I wish I lived in an alternate timeline where every pocket-size device had a Palm Universal Connector on the bottom. How rad would it be to be able to clip your phone, *random handheld linux device*, ebook reader, etc. into one of the Palm folding keyboards?
