So I'm at my gran's right now and the main fuse has blown. While we wait for Northern Powergrid to arrive, my dad's taken the liberty of changing the socket behind the sofa, since the old one is broken.


Anyway, it turns out that none of her sockets are earthed, so it's a miracle nobody's been electrocuted in the 60+ years the family's been living here.

I've been routinely replacing the outlets in my house. metal boxes without proper grounding all throughout.

Hardly unusual in older homes and apartments in the US. Not really an electrocution risk by itself, if the insulation holds, and the old (oversized copper) asbestos-wrapped wires usually will be fine if you don't mess with them...
