Recently done 200 years of family genealogy at 162 pages with images.

Groff was easy and looked good and worked on multiple platforms.

Wow! That sounds awesome. Did you use a lot of tbl and pic to draw trees and tables and stuff?

I looked and done a few trees but with 1500 people it was just to hard to follow.

you can try to use

— graph description language.

it is very easy and later with the program 'dot' you can generate the graph.

— image which illustrates usage of dot and output graph.

I did try graphs but it would not fit all and be readable even at poster board size.

I also did not have a printer on hand and I did not want to ask someone else to use an entire pack of paper and ink.

graphviz is great! difficult in my experience to achieve very precise layout though...
