Is there any precedent in history for a medium that has words but no pictures or markup? Books and newspapers have typographic elements and pictures. Even the oldest books have illustrations.

Speech has words but no pictures. Song? Braille for obvious reasons.

Speech person-to-person has loads of side band expression. Body language, facial expression, tone of voice. Even plain recordings have tone of voice, so it’s not just the words. I’m wondering if non-pre-formatted gemtext is actually the least expressive form of communication humans have ever had. I apologize if that sounds harsh. It doesn’t negate the other benefits of gemtext. But when I consider it in context, that’s what I see.
