Learning a new language is always difficult, and becomes nearly impossible when you don't have anyone to practice it with on a regular basis. I'm sorry you had that experience in Korea, but I understand it pretty well based on my experience living in the Netherlands.

I've been living in NL for nearly 7 years but have never learned the language. Everyone here speaks English! It's a required subject in their schools and they're all fluent. For me, it's taken actually signing up for some language courses at the university to finally learn Dutch. I'm actually on my way to my first certification exam for the A2 level this very morning! :)
