Dell 5420 Rugged review

The Dell Latitude 5420 Rugged is a solidly build 14 inch laptop that happens to be very heavy, so heavy that it comes with it own handle!

I got this machine from a second hand store for $700.

The palmrest is scrached to hell, the rubberised coating on this part came off entirely. there is also a few minor scrachs on the screen.

The screen is a FHD touch screen, if brightness is turned to max, the screen is blindingly bright when indoor. I also noticed the very good color representation, on par with some older macbook pros

The mainboard is build around an i5-8350U, I upgraded the machine with 2x16G DDR4 ram sticks. Due to its large thermal mass, the main system fan do not turn on even under moderate load. The performance is otherwise unremarkable.

Being a rugged laptop, the screen is lock in place when closed with a spring loaded latch. all peripheral ports can be covered up by hatches, but none of the hatches have rubber padding or O-Ring, so the water resistance is questionable.

Ports include: 3xUSB3.0 1xUSB2.0 2xEthernet 2xSerial ports 1xHDMI and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The nvme drive is housed in a proprietary caddy with heat pipe connected to the main fan, I have not observed this kind of design in my other computers.
