Favorites games? (Retro and Modern)

Has this topic been covered already? Please lmk if in case disambiguation is necessary, thanks.

It's all in the title, self-explanatory, really. What's your favorite titles to play? Both included, retro and modern age. I'd love to read about the different preferences of VG over geminauts here on Bubble. I'll start w/ 3 from each, feel free to categorize however you like tho.

Retro: Streets of rage 3 (GEN), Earthbound (SNES), Doom (PC)

Modern: Wipeout HD/Omega (PS3/PS4), GTA IV, Audiosurf.

The games I dig, for the most part, cover either action-driven sequences or storyline-heavy interplay.. I'd love to hear what kinda games catch you all.

I have been playing ULTRAKILL for 100 hours now and don't want to stop.

It is fast paced retro-like FPS with skill based scoring system

I've really enjoyed puzzle games in recent years. I've done multiple playthroughs of these:

โ€” The Witness

โ€” Manifold Garden

Casual word games are always fun:

โ€” Knotwords

I've also loved many of Bioware's RPGs, such as the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. Hardly have that many hours to invest in gaming nowadays, sadly.

When it comes to retro, in the 2000s I was big into Half-Life 2 and the Doom-based games, of course. One other retro favorite that comes to mind is Sid Meyer's Railroads!, a *tycoon-style simulation.

I feel like we've done a thread like this before, but I don't mind thinking it over again!

Retro: Everquest, Transport Tycoon, Daggerfall

Modern: The Sims 4, Cyberpunk 2077, Civilization V, and any visual novel with a good story and/or art. :)

These games have a place on my wall, for historical reasons: Doom 2, Baldur's Gate 2, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Half-Life.

For "classics" I'll add to that: Planescape Torment, Longest Journey, Grim Fandango, Civilization ... the first, I guess ... X-Wing and TIE Fighter.

Here's what comes to mind for my own lists. Modern (21st century): Outer Wilds, The Witness, Cinco Paus, Hadean Lands, Castle Doctrine, Brogue, Varicella. Older: Exile (Superior Software), Exile (Spiderweb Software), Trinity, X-COM, Nethack.

Try Marsmare Allienation for zx spectrum (platformer-shooter). Retro gaiming is getting traction recently, you can browse collections and play them all in the browser.

Team fortress 2 is highly addictive, i am a victim of it right now.

@vincemgn if you're diggin ULTRAKILL, have you tried out Cruelty Squad? Seems like another retro shooter, but with more postmodern satirical elements and themes similar to Rainbow Six n Hitman I'm down to hear your take on it

Does Quake 2 count as a retro game these days? It's more than just my favourite, it was the game that really got me into PC gaming when I was young.

As for modern game. I play so so so many of them that I'm not sure I really have favourites. I also find my gaming preferences vacillates depending on what's going on in my life.

So my favourites right now, in January 2024 would probably be...

Monster Hunter: World (and Rise)

Space Trash Scavenger
