I've been thinking of getting a PDA, but I'm not quite sure what one I want. I'm leaning towards the Palm T|X, but I've heard that the battereies are difficult to replace in them. But I also have a soft spot for the old monochrome PDA's like the Handspring Visor. Not sure which way I want to go. Part of me wants to actually use these things occasionally to step away from the always connected smartphone world so I'm also looking at them from the standpoint of practical functionality. I'm also thinking the T|X would have the latest version of Palm OS, but how much does that really matter?

IMHO, you can divide the Palms into 2 big sections: those running OS5, which have ARM CPUs, and the earlier generation that rely on the trusty old Dragonball CPUs. Most of the software I use runs on pre-OS5 devices, it's usually when you want to use webbrowsers and more demanding games that you'll notice OS5 is a prerequisite.

I prefer the monochrome pdas for their visibility without backlight and superior battery life. The only reason to care about Palm OS version is if you have specific apps you want to run that don't support older versions.
