I've spent most of my life bitching about the Intel architecture, but now I actually kind of like coding in x86-64 assembly. In a nostalgic kind of way. It is surprisingly compact (if you know what you're doing) and it's always amusing to come up with a really cool way of doing something in a handful of bytes. But it's an acquired taste, and a questionable one at that.

i love the book 'programming from the ground up' by jonathan barlett. it is under free license.


alas, it is written by describing intel 32 bit architechure, but it is not at all hard to adapt it in mind for x86_64.
