The image remains the same size while everything around scales up. It would be nice to be able to zoom in on images especially on small-screen devices.

This is a known limitation. I have a bunch of improvements planned for the image viewer, mostly through the addition of a separate image viewing mode. With that, images could be more freely viewed (full-screen panned, zoomed) without being constrained by the document layout.
