Mirrored Content on Gemini

Is it rude to mirror content on Geminispace? I'm not sure what my own opinion on this is, much less what others think.

For example, if I make a post on my personal phlog on SDF, would it be rude to also post it to /u/Ruby_Witch on here? I mean the entire post, not just a link to the post. I feel like people are a lot more likely to actually read something if they don't have to click through.

I like having my own private phlog where everything is stored, but it's just a lot easier to get feedback here. Curious what other people think.

I think it's fine if you mirror something from your personal capsule onto Bubble or Station. Maybe add a small footnote linking to the original page.

If the intention is just to facilitate commenting, the mirrored post could be an excerpt or a summary, and the reader is meant to visit your capsule for the full post.

— There is /s/discuss for this purpose, too.

I suppose things start to get more distasteful if you mirror all your posts constantly on multiple community capsules, though. Not sure where the excessive spamminess threshold is, though.

Having personal backup copies of content you've posted to community capsules is a good practice, to avoid data loss.

Funny, I was grappling with this myself over the myriad of networks I'm now on. Twitter finally broke my patience. I joined BlueSky. Then I started using Mastodon more. Then I joined Threads (begrudgingly). Then I discovered this BBS, and Station.

For many years, Twitter was really the only place I posted. Maybe the stray Instagram post or two, but it was mostly Twitter. Now I feel adrift, and a little nostalgic for the way things used to be, I might add. Which was why this place - this whole protocol - was so appealing. It's like stepping back in time.

But now. where to land? What to keep? What to let go? And what to post where? And yes, what to crosspost? All very good questions...

I feel like if it's your content you should be free to duplicate and post it wherever you like. However, it's not clear to me if the poll is referring to other people's content as well.

Removed my previous comment because it related to mirroring other people's work, not one's own. I think the only limit on how you can share your own content is how you want it to be shared. I don't feel it rude to mirror one's content from Gopher on Gemini: that's actually how I started my own capsule in 2021.

my comment was too long, so i only was able to post it as long text in my space gemini://bbs.geminispace.org/u/norayr/3173

(For the record, comments and regular posts both can use the draft composer to assemble longer content. Check out the Help page for details about the "Special Commands".)

I have been thinking about this same thing wrt Bubble vs. Station vs. Mastodon, i.e., the microblogging services I'm using.

It seems to me that in an ideal situation your content should live in one place that you control, and you could (re)publish it various other places as a mirror or excerpt, linking to the original post.

ActivityPub basically does exactly that, but in the context of Gemini, I think it's a little too complex... A gemlog + Antenna fits the bill quite well, but gemlogs are more geared toward longer standalone posts, so for microblogging it's not a good fit. I think I'd prefer posting here on /u/skyjake, or on a hypothetical Bubble-based skyjake.fi, and have it automatically crosspost to Mastodon.

why mirror when you can link?

@gyaradong, some of us never go on the bigweb...

@stack I meant link from BBS to home gemini pod and mirror to that instead of mirroring the content on BBS. Reddit has a "link" post type.

since i shared something about decentralization before in this thread, i would like to also share this new, but old idea of mine on how to decentralize gemini space: gemini://bbs.geminispace.org/s/Gemini/4054
