Whatever happened to Konpeito?

I was looking around the corners of Geminispace that I used to frequent, when I discovered that the Konpeito site is down, and seemingly has been for a while. A few people are hosting backup mirrors, but I'm interested to know what happened behind the scenes, if anyone knows anything.

Mainly, I'm wondering why the project ended, and if there's any sort of alternative, sister project, or successor!

I'd love to see a successor too. It was an amazing project. I still listen to their tapes often.
