Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) on Letterboxd

> When oil is discovered in 1920s Oklahoma under Osage Nation land, the Osage people are murdered one by one—until the FBI steps in to unravel the mystery.

It might sound superficial but one of the things that attracted me toward this movie was its runtime, which is more than 3 hours. A movie with a runtime of more than 3 hours in day and age when people's attention span is on a free fall is certainly welcome, at least to me, provided it earns its runtime. I'm glad to say that this movie does earn its runtime.

This movie is based on real life events and a non-fiction book of the same name. It's based on the Osage Indian murders during the 1910s - 1930s. The Osage Indians got rich because they found oil in their lands. The rights to those lands were inherited by legal heirs who could be non-Osage as well. At this point, anyone's who's familiar with USA's obsession with oil can guess how things went. The movie depicts how Ernest Burkhart, a nephew of William King Hale, married an Osage woman, Mollie Kyle, for the legal right to own her wealth. As if that wasn't enough, Ernest assists in the murder of Mollie's sisters. If you think that's fucked up, that's not the complete extent to how low Ernest fell, which is well depicted at the end of this movie.

I'm glad that some movie directors think it's still okay to make movies that are as exhaustive and methodical as Killers of the Flower Moon. This movie is not exciting. The extended cut of the movie "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" has a runtime of more than 4 hours but it relies on a lot of epic battle scenes and exciting moments to justify its runtime. When I watching Killers of the Flower Moon, I never felt that there were any moments that were artificial and inserted solely for the sake of extending its runtime. If you're mature enough to watch a mature drama, go watch this movie.

I hereby rate this movie a 5 out of 5.
