Words on Bathroom Walls (2020)

Drama

Words on Bathroom Walls (2020) on Letterboxd

It's definitely serendipitous that I watched this movie because it's tagged as a Romantic Drama and I usually avoid these kinds of movies. I guess it's because I'm watching the second season of the anime "Mushoku Tensei" these days and it has elements of romance as well. Additionally, the premise of this movie mentions a cast suffering from mental illness, which I empathize with.

Mushoku Tensei on anilist.co

Adam suffers from schizophrenia and his mom tries to help him in every way possible but considering that this mental illness might come with paranoid delusions and the side effects of medications may not always be a motivator to keep taking them, Adam drives people away from him. He is fortunate to have a family and a girl who likes him the way he is.

For a movie that's tagged as a romantic drama, I did expect some romance in this movie but there wasn't much to be found. Taylor Russell, who plays Maya, does looks good in this movie but I wish she got more screen time with Charlie Plummer, who plays Adam. I'm also not sure about the creative liberties that this movie took with depicting the auditory and visual hallucinations that Adam suffers from but I won't judge the movie on this.

I hereby rate this movie a 4 out of 5.
