The political realities of living offgrid.

The amount of feedback I have recieved about living offgrid is far greater than anything else I have written. Because of this, I am going to take some time to lean into this subject, and in doing so, I intend to cut out as much bullshit as I can, and be completely real about it.

The most difficult part of living offgrid has nothing to do with the work, equipment, and life habits required to live off grid. In fact, that part is enjoyable, and rewarding. Currently, the greatest obstacles are political. The finacial and political systems that exist in much of the Western world today are built on a paradigm of profit and waste. When you break free from these systems, the people who profit from these systems feel threatened. There is also a strange thing that happens to humans when they work in a bureacracy. They begin to feel like "they are in charge". And when the people change and brush them aside, they take it personally, and start trying to hinder the natural growth of the people. This happens often enough that buracracy is known for stifling the natural growth of the people.

With the state of technology, it is entirely possible to start small, and by being creative and frugal, build up sustainable systems that provide power, water, waste processing, and food production for yourself and a few others. Because technology outpaces politics, currently, the greatest obstacles to building a sustainable life are not financial, they are political.

I say all of this because it needs to be understood. The large, and increasing number of people who wish to live simple sustainable lives are going to be in direct conflict with the buracracy which still has a mentality from the 1950s. And for those of us commited to sustainable living, this is something that we are eventually going to have to confront and deal with.
