Reading Solderpunk’s attempts at working in a disconnected manner

gemini://gemini.circumlunar.space/~solderpunk/gemlog/progress-toward-offline-first.gmi

reminds me of my early working days in the early 90s - UUCP worked quite closely to the way he wants. At my first job, we had no direct internet access. We had a cron job that would dial our UUCP provider once an hour, sending e-mail and usenet posts out, and receiving anything waiting to come in. Everything else, we did on our internal network. Sun provided you with “Answerbook” CDs full of their documentation, though of course there were still also shelves full of printed matter. Having so much headspace to think, tinker and build things was lovely.

I thought I’d seen mention of somebody reviving a UUCP network fairly recently, but the site no longer worked by the time I went to have a look.

Given that I’m in the southern hemisphere, I’m finding interacting with Gemini folk to work a bit like this already - most things happen overnight, and I catch up the next morning. It’s fine by me - there’s no rush, and it’s a relaxing counterpoint to my day job where everyone seems annoyed about things not happening fast enough.
