2020-07-23 - names

I'm late to the party, but last night I noticed some discussion around how folk name their computers - Cornish saints is a new one to me!

For a long time now, mine have mostly been music-related. There are so many bands or artists find inspiration from, so it's an endless well. I have a current batch of systems named after one particular German band, and was proud of having left beind a server called "merzbow" at one particular company (I really did need to listen to a lot of harsh noise to get over that place). When I worked at a university a /long/ time ago, the suite of servers we commissioned for one project were all named after popular Australian biscuits - "timtam", "salada", and a few others, culminating with "icedvovo".

Here's 5 songs / bands that provided me with system names over the years

Avatrix, by Jack Frost.

Ghosts of American Astronauts, by the Mekons.

You Tell Me, by the Go-Betweens.

Map Ref. 41°N 93°W, by Wire.

Harmony in Ultraviolet, by Tim Hecker.
