A hum of morning traffic, which some quiet music is enough to hide.

How did I end up here? I've had a longing for something away from the doom-scrolling nature of well-known sites that have over-aggregated our thoughts. I remember the vaunted alternatives like Identi.ca and App.Net, I've (briefly) toyed with Diaspora and Hubzilla, and I'm currently prodding at SSB. I have small Mastodon and Pixelfed presences - while I've yet to get much from them, it hasn't been zero, and it was interesting to quickly come across folk like Alex Schroeder who I remember from Emacs-related things.

It just so happens that, despite having the shiniest new server/desktop I've had in a long, long time, my work-from-home situation means I need to more clearly delineate work vs non-work time by spending my free time in other parts of the house. This is a nice problem to have, for sure - I'm really lucky not to have to work from the kitchen table, for instance. A comedy-sized iPad with a keyboard cover is what I find myself using for idle "stuff", and so I've reverted to spending much of my idle time with a full-screen terminal window nearby (old habits die hard!). Gemini seems to fit in well with that kind of world. Alex tooted that link of Gemini client reviews the other day, and I thought "what do I have to lose?"

Now playing:

Blink, a lovely terminal emulator for the iPad.
