Day Lily

I had taken a picture of a day lily in my backyard at some point. It's a picture I kept going back to, probably because of the lighting or the fact that the lily was orange, which is my favorite color. In any case, the image makes me happy, so I decided to make a print out of it.

Initially, I had thought to use linoleum for the block, but had just gotten a 3d printer and decided to use this image as a way to learn about 3d imaging and printing. I figured building the print block in 3d would give me more detail than I could get in my usual lino process. While the size was limited by what my printer can handle, the resulting block works really well and results in greater detail than can be achieved (by my anyway) with linoleum.

I had so much fun creating the block in CAD that I decided to design a frame specifically for this piece. I wanted it to be a single piece, meaing no joints, and require no nails or glue. After some trial and error, I finally got this to work as well and was able to incorporate the frame (and matte which is also 3d printed) into the design of the final variations. In other words, the print and the frame are linked - they are part of the same piece and intended to saty together.

While this work is still being produced, you can see all the editions that have been printed below.
